When the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) implemented the National Do Not Call (DNC) Registry in 2003, 32 states already managed their own DNC lists. In the ensuing years, most of those states chose to forgo the continued maintenance of state-specific lists and adopted the federal list. However, there remain 12 holdouts who continue to offer their residents the option to register their phone numbers on a state-level DNC list in addition to the federal list.

While each state list has its own idiosyncrasies based on factors such the state law it was created to enforce and the office or agency responsible for enforcing it, there are three essential elements that telemarketers should know: how often the lists are updated, when telemarketers are required to obtain the updated lists, and the fees associated with obtaining the lists. The table below includes that information for each state as well as a link to the websites where telemarketers can find more information about registration for each state’s list.
